2026 Volvo EX90 Boasts Powerful New Computer, 800V System for Faster Charging

Published on September 23, 2025 in Electric by Guillaume Rivard

The launch of the all-new, fully electric Volvo EX90 hasn’t gone according to plan due to delays and software issues, among other things. We’ve talked about it a few times already including in our first-drive review. For 2026, its second year on the market, the Swedish automaker is seemingly trying to make amends.

First, with the upgrade to a dual NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Orin-based core computer, the EX90 now has 500 trillion operations per second of computing power. And this won’t be limited to new units: owners of a 2025 EX90 will receive a one-time free upgrade of their vehicle’s core computer through a scheduled Volvo dealer visit.

The core computer upgrade enables new and improved safety, collision avoidance and driver support features. New features include connected safety alerts for slippery roads, hazards ahead and accidents ahead, along with the integration of automatic e-call functionality with Emergency Stop Assist in select markets.

Further enhancements include expanded automatic emergency steering functionality in darkness, along with Park Pilot assist for parallel parking.

Faster Charging, More Power

In another big move, the 2026 Volvo EX90 replaces the previous model year’s 400V system with a new 800V architecture that reduces heat generation and enables faster charging speeds, the company said. Charging performance is further improved by Volvo’s in-house developed battery management software, which uses a smart algorithm and makes charging significantly faster than previously possible. The EX90 will now be able to add up to 250 km of range in just 10 minutes in ideal conditions.

Additionally, 800V technology has the ability to deliver more power and faster acceleration, while ensuring better energy efficiency. However, Volvo hasn’t released any figures yet. The 2025 EX90 generates up to 510 horsepower and 671 lb-ft of torque, and achieves a combined 24.9 kWh/100 km for a range of 499 km, according to Natural Resources Canada.

Also for 2026, an electrochromic panoramic roof will be included, allowing drivers to adjust the glass transparency to reduce glare or boost privacy at the touch of a button.

New U.S. Investments

Speaking of the EX90, Volvo also announced today new investments in its U.S. plant in Ridgeville, South Carolina to maximize its utilization over the coming years. This factory assembles not only the EX90 but also the Polestar 3. However, it is nowhere close to reaching its full annual production capacity of 150,000 units.

The XC60 compact SUV will join the mix starting in late 2026, as previously announced. That's not all: we’ve just learned that Volvo plans to build a next-generation hybrid model there by 2030. No other details were given, except that this vehicle will be "designed to meet the requirements of the U.S. market." The future XC90 would be a good bet.
