Refreshed 2026 Alfa Romeo Tonale Kills PHEV Model in U.S., Not in Canada

Published on October 15, 2025 in Hybrid/Plug-in Hybrid by Guillaume Rivard

Sales of the Alfa Romeo Tonale have taken a huge tumble so far in 2025, including a 47% drop in Canada. For the upcoming 2026 model year, the Italian compact crossover is getting a few design tweaks and a new top-line model, but more importantly the plug-in hybrid variant has been discontinued in the U.S.

That’s right: the Tonale PHEV is gone after just two years on the market. It delivered a total system output of 285 horsepower, a solid 347 lb-ft of torque and a pure electric range of 53 km. In Canada, mind you, the Tonale PHEV will stay, as a Stellantis spokesperson later clarified to The Car Guide.

The standard powertrain is a turbocharged 2.0-litre engine that produces 268 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque through a nine-speed automatic transmission and Q4 all-wheel drive system. Incidentally, there are no changes to that powertrain or performance for 2026.

What Else is New?

Designers have revised the Tonale’s front fascia, which now sports a concave scudetto grille inspired by the Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale supercar, plus more aggressive-looking trilobe lower intakes. Also new for 2026 are wider front and rear tracks, a reduced front overhang as well as unique wheel designs such as the 20-inch three-hole units you can see on the pictures.

Meanwhile, updated black-and-white Alfa Romeo badging is paired with a selection of eight body colours, three of which are offered for the first time—Rosso Brera (red), Verde Monza (green) and Giallo Ocra (yellow). A contrasting black roof is available with or without the optional power moonroof.

Inside, look for refreshed materials, colours and finishes such as sporty red leather seating with coordinated red stitching—a Tonale first.

New Sport Speciale Edition

The 2026 Alfa Romeo Tonale is available in three trim levels, starting with the base Sprint (18-inch wheels, gloss black accents, fabric seats, aluminum pedals and more) and mid-grade Veloce (19-inch wheels, Brembo brakes, dual-mode suspension, power liftgate, leather seats with ventilation and so on).

The new Sport Speciale edition at the top of the lineup stands out with silver accents on the side skirts and rear bumper, gloss-black Brembo brake calipers, the aforementioned 20-inch wheels, exclusive ambient lighting and black-and-pearl perforated Alcantara seats with contrasting white stitching. The dashboard fascia is finished in black Alcantara, too.
