2025 Lexus IS 500: The Last of Its Kind
The last major update to the Lexus IS dates back to the 2021 model year. It mostly involved cosmetic revisions and some tightening of nuts and bolts. Almost nothing has changed since then, making the current IS a very old car. Heck, it’s one of the few that still have a CD player! On that note, our test drive got us sifting through a forgotten box of CDs and reminiscing about some classics, which was cool.
Is the venerable age of a sporty sedan that can no longer compete with German rivals from a technical standpoint such a disadvantage? After more than 1,400 km behind the wheel of a 2025 Lexus IS 500, we can tell you the answer is no. Quite the contrary, in fact.

R.I.P. V8
As previously reported, Lexus is making significant changes to the IS for 2026 including a simplified lineup with just one engine option. Among other things, the aforementioned CD player will be gone along with the touchpad on the centre console, both replaced by a modern and graphically attractive multimedia system. That said, we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to bid farewell to the IS 500, which happens to be the last of its kind in 2025.

That’s right: here we have the only Japanese-built RWD sedan on the market, one with a naturally aspirated V8 to boot. It generates 472 horsepower and accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 4.5 seconds while delivering unique driving thrills you can’t get anywhere else.
Mark our words: the Lexus IS 500 is delightfully potent and a treat for the ears. It’s not perfect, but that’s also part of what makes it compelling. Forget about matching the BMW M3’s agility. However, the driving experience still proves exhilarating and quite enjoyable, even with occasional power management issues. The sometimes twitchy rear end, sluggish transmission and outdated suspension demand a peculiar driving style. It takes some getting used to, but pleasure is definitely part of the mix.

One can argue that the finest German cars ultimately lose their character somehow. While they may be easier to drive and more nimble, they don't necessarily offer truly rewarding driving dynamics. You know, the kind that forces you to master weight transfers, develop a closer relationship with the engine and learn how everything works together to get the most out of the car because electronics won’t do it for you. What we’re trying to say is that a car should be like a dance partner, not a robot like the latest Mercedes-AMG C 63.
The IS 500’s naturally aspirated 5.0-litre V8 is a relentless performer with a fantastic sound. Once it gets to cruising speed, the engine settles nicely and proves reasonably fuel-efficient, as we found out during a surprisingly comfortable 500-km trip on Ontario’s Highway 401. Of course, you need to resist the urge to unleash all of the 472 ponies under the hood.

Humpless Hero
You know that annoying hump in the driver’s footwell on AWD-equipped IS models? It’s mercifully missing in RWD configuration. Of course, rear-wheel drive is far from ideal in cold weather, but it makes for a more exciting sports sedan. The IS 500 is fun, stable and comfortable, with beautifully sculpted, multiway adjustable seats that add to the experience by contributing to an excellent driving position.
Needless to say, the infotainment system leaves something to be desired. The instrument cluster with the motorized dial is outdated, as is the touchscreen. Relying on the cumbersome and frustrating console-mounted touchpad doesn’t help at all. On the plus side, having physical controls for the HVAC system is pleasant, while the analog clock is another refreshing touch in this digital age. If you’re looking for a fresher, more convenient layout, the 2026 IS 350 is what you need.

Still a Few Units Left
Believe it or not, no fewer than three IS 500 models are available for 2025. The base F-Sport Performance model can be equipped with the + package (as tested), which includes a 360-degree camera monitor and parking assist. Next up is a Special Appearance package featuring 19-inch BBS forged wheels. Finally, there's the Ultimate Edition, finished in white with a black and red interior—not as fancy or head-turning as our bright yellow tester. Only 40 units were allocated to the Canadian market.
Despite being seriously old, the Lexus IS 500 still looks sharp. With its sloping, domed hood, raised rear end and quad tailpipes, it's a car that forces passersby to do a double take, if only to ascertain what it is. The primary motive for buying one is simply to enjoy a good time on the road.
And you know what? It’s not outrageously expensive at around $75,000. Factor in slow depreciation, and the IS 500 is far from a bad deal. We think owners will fall in love with it and develop a long-lasting relationship considering its durability and reliability, not to mention ownership costs that beat those of any German sports sedan you can think of.
