Potential Engine Failure Leads to Yet Another Recall on Jeep’s PHEVs
Seriously, what’s the deal with Jeep’s plug-in hybrid SUVs? We recently reported about an unresolved fire risk that forced the company to issue a new recall, as repairs that were previously carried out on some vehicles may not be fully effective.
And just a few days ago, yet another recall was added to the long list. This one affects 2024-2025 Wrangler 4xe models built between June 7, 2023 and March 4, 2025, as well as 2023-2025 Grand Cherokee 4xe models built between July 19, 2023 and March 3, 2025.

It appears that the engine in some 5,600 units in Canada (and another 112,000 south of the border) may not have been manufactured correctly. More specifically, “sand from the casting process can contaminate internal engine components, leading to a catastrophic engine failure, which can result in a vehicle fire or an unexpected and unrecoverable loss of propulsion,” according to documents posted by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

This contamination issue will manifest itself through engine knocking and/or a malfunction indicator lamp prior to catastrophic failure. If any of these symptoms occur, Jeep recommends to stop driving the vehicle in order to avoid a breakdown, accident, damage or fire.
As of October 20, 2025, the automaker is aware of 36 fires and 50 losses of propulsion potentially relating to this issue for all markets. No accident has been reported, but it’s said that there have been three injuries so far.
Affected owners will receive a recall notice by mail in the coming weeks. At the time of writing, the remedy was still being developed. Given the nature of the problem, however, an engine replacement seems likely.

Jeep’s plug-in hybrid system combines a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine with an electric motor and a 17kWh battery for a total of 375 horsepower, 470 lb-ft of torque and approximately 35-40 km of electric range.
As we wrote in late September, the decision was made to drop the previously announced Gladiator 4xe pickup. Jeep said it will focus on meeting customer demand more directly by offering more of what people actually want, including factory-installed features and customization options.
