Biggest Subaru Engine Redesign in 20 Years

Published on September 6, 2010 in News by Dan Fritter

Subaru is famous for two things: a fantastic all-wheel drive system, and their unique boxer engine layout. Similar to that found in Porsche’s famous sports cars, the flat four motors found under the hoods of most of Subaru’s passenger cars provides both a low center of gravity and a logically laid-out engine bay.

And for 2011, it sounds like would-be Subaru buyers can look forward to reaping the benefits of what could be the first significant redesign to the brand’s signature engine layout in two decades. Early rumours point to 10% increases in fuel economy for both 2.0L and 2.5L variants, with the first expected application being within a CVT-equipped Forester, with subsequent usage in the Legacy and Impreza sedans.
