Porsche Ends 997 With New Speedster

Published on October 2, 2010 in Paris by Dan Fritter

The current 911 is on its way out. Known as the 997, it will be replaced next year by what will come to be known as the 991 generation of Porsche’s most famous product. And to send it off, Porsche has built this: the 911 Speedster.

Following in the footsteps of just two 911 Speedster models that came before, the new one features a rakish design benefitting from a steeply sloped and chopped windshield, the widened rear body from a Carrera 4S cabriolet, a new front spoiler, clear turn signals, blackened headlight surrounds and windshield frame, and black protective patches on the rear wheel arches. Inside, a naturally aspirated flat six resides in the traditional location and pumps 402 horsepower through the now-famous PDK gearbox.

Limited to just 365 examples, the Speedster will be plenty rare, and should provide a good final send off to one of the most popular 911 generations ever.
