The BMW 3 Series is often considered the benchmark in the compact luxury car segment, mainly because of its driving dynamics and technology. Having launched in the summer of 1975 (or 1977 in North America), it recently celebrated its 50th anniversary, which makes it even more special.

Seven generations have come and gone over the past half-century, with the most recent being released for the 2019 model year. An update was made for 2022 and further changes came later. For 2025, highlights include new colours, new interior features and extra power for the 6-cylinder engines (except the M3 with manual gearbox). The plug-in hybrid model is no more, but mild hybrid technology has been introduced (again, except for the M3).

While we wait to see what the next generation has in store, based on the Vision Neue Klasse concept and available in a fully electric variant, make sure to read our latest BMW 3 Series review and enjoy a visual history lesson in our photo gallery above.
