Throwback Thursday: Four-wheel steering (03:24)

Published on September 24, 2015 in Motoring TV by Graeme Fletcher

"Four-wheel steering at its very best."

That's how Graeme Fletcher described the system as it appeared in the third generation Honda Prelude.

The Prelude, as well as the Mazda 626, were credited with bringing four-wheel steering to the North American masses.

The feature faded into obscurity after a short time, despite Graeme's prognosis of "a definite place in the market" for it, though it did return for a short while in as an option in GM's full-size truck range.

The feature is also looking to make a comeback in at least a few new concept cars, with the Audi e-tron quattro and Porsche Mission E both featuring four-wheel steering.

So what does the future hold for four-wheel steering?

As Brad Diamond would say, time will tell.

This segment originally appeared on Episode 3 of Motoring 1988.
