Motoring TV 2016 Green Car of the Year (02:07)

"The need to clean up our environmental act is pressing," says Graeme Fletcher.

"With that in mind, let's take a look at the nominees for best new green car."

Indeed, there are plenty of new vehicles that qualify for Motoring TV's Green Car of the Year award, but three in particular stood out for their environmental prowess.

BMW's take on sustainable mobility is found in the i3, a quirky little hatchback that takes a much more practical approach than its i sibling, the BMW i8.

While its looks are polarizing, the results are enough to make any driver happy: As much as 260 kilometres of pure electric driving and all the luxury you'd expect from a BMW.

The redesigned Chevrolet Volt takes everything the first-gen version did well and amps it up to the next level.

Better looks, a more intuitive interior and a driving range of nearly 700 kilometres on a single charge and full tank of gas to fuel its onboard generator.

On the opposite side of the spectrum is the Volvo XC90 T8 Twin Engine Plug-in Hybrid.

"Normally one would not view a full-size sport ute as a green car," says Graeme.

But with its efficient supercharged and turbocharged gas engine, twin electric motors and sizable lithium-ion battery, the hybrid XC90 more than fits the bill.
