The family sedan may be diminishing when it comes to sales, according to Brad Diamond, but it's not diminishing in importance.

The proof of that is in the sheer number of new or redesigned entries for the 2016 model year, making choosing a winner all the more difficult.

Making the cut as Motoring TV's 2016 Family Car of the Year are the Acura ILX, Chevrolet Malibu and Kia Optima, which all bring a healthy dose of practicality to the table.

In the ILX, that practicality is joined by just enough sportiness, while the Malibu gets a surprising amount of athleticism.

Kia was careful when it came to overhauling the Optima for 2016, but it definitely didn't play it safe, with plenty of good added to an already great car.
