Seven-time Formula 1 world champion Michael Schumacher had a serious accident Sunday at the Meribel ski resort in the French Alps.
While skiing with his son, Schumacher fell in a section off the main trail and his head hit a rock. He was immediately taken by helicopter to a hospital in Grenoble.
As of the most recent press release issued this morning, Michael Schumacher was immediately operated on upon his arrival at the hospital and has suffered a severe head injury. He is being kept in an artificial coma.
From what we have learned, after his accident Schumacher was still conscious but restless and in a state of shock. He was first helicoptered to a local hospital and then transported to Grenoble afterward.
Members of his family along with Jean Todt, his former Ferrari team boss are at his bedside. Olivier Panis, a former F1 driver, was present at his hospital yesterday but was unable to see him because of the seriousness of his condition.
At a press conference, Schumacher’s doctor, Dr. Jean-François Payen, said it was too early to comment on the future of his patient.
