Autoguide.com is reporting that Toyota has now confirmed that the FT-1 will, in fact, become the next Supra as expected. Unfortunately there are still no details as to what the final production version will yield in terms of performance but expect it to be a competitor to the Nissan GT-R and upcoming Acura NSX. That will put a price tag of over $100K on it.

The Japanese brand has also confirmed a new entry-level coupe for its lineup starting at around $16,000 USD. Figure a few thousand more for Canadian customers, but this will still be less than the FR-S. Look for it to be hybrid-powered and in production by 2017.

Original article, January 20, 2014:

There was a lot of buzz on the web about the next Toyota Supra which was to be unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show. The FT-1 Concept that we saw wasn’t exactly it but will still likely give a good indication of the lines of next Toyota Supra.

Contrary to what was reported, the next Supra will be a powerful sports coupe designed and developed entirely in-house at Toyota, without the help of BMW.

That said, the agreement between BMW and Toyota to share engineering and development costs of a coupe remains intact. The German brand will probably use the engineering to develop a car to become the next Z4, while Toyota we take the opportunity to revive a coupe-cabriolet under the Lexus nameplate.

There is also talk of BMW making use of a new joint platform design to develop a third model of the "i" family, which would bear the name i4.
