BMW Unveils its 2014 M4 DTM Race Car

The main development work on the upcoming BMW M4 Race Car has been completed and BMW is letting us feast our eyes on this performance machine which will compete in the upcoming DTM season.

We say the main development work is complete because as of March 1st, modifications to fundamental areas of the car are prohibited, leaving only minor tweaks to be done by engineers.

BMW will present all eight of these vehicles on April 25th at the BMW Welt in Munich, Germany.

“Even before the BMW M3 DTM completed its final race last season, our development team was already hard at work on the 2014 car,” said BMW Motorsport Director Jens Marquardt. “Preparing a new car for the DTM is a big challenge. In few other series is aerodynamics so important. Even the slightest detail can make the difference between success and failure. And this attention to detail shown by our engineers is apparent at first glance – from the elongated bonnet with its steeply sloping front and aerodynamically optimised wing mirrors, to the contoured roofline that is a characteristic feature of the BMW M4.”

The BMW M4 DTM lies low and flat on the tarmac. Characteristic design elements, such as the modern take on the twin headlight arrangement and distinctive twin-bar kidney grille, ensure that the car clearly stands out as a BMW M vehicle.

The car improves upon its predecessor’s already lightweight construction by shedding 80 kilograms to come in at just 1497 kilograms. Virtually the entire body is made of ultra-light and durable carbon fiber material.

The BMW P66 engine under the hood generates approximately 480 bhp and allows it to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in about three seconds.

The DTM Series is a German-based European race car series. The name stands for Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft (German Touring Car Championship). For the 2014 season there will be similar car specifications between this series, Japan’s SuperGT Series and NASCAR’s Grand American Road Racing Association. In 2015 or 2016 a North American DTM Series is scheduled to come to fruition.
