A Second Toyota FT-1 For Monterey

Published on August 13, 2014 in News by Frédérick Boucher-Gaulin

Toyota’s FT-1 Concept staggered the crowd when it was launched. Its red paint gave it a racecar vibe, and its gorgeous curves gave people much to think about. Was this car heralding the return of the Supra? Was Toyota on the verge of launching a Porsche-fighting sports car?

The rumor mill was running at full throttle, and the manufacturer was encouraging speculation by remaining relatively tight-lipped about the prototype. Now, it would seem that another car has been produced, and this one will be showcased at Pebble Beach.

This second version of the FT-1 is different from the first in one key aspect: colour. While the firetruck-red model was beautiful, this one sports a fabulous Anthracite grey robe. The interior is also different, featuring some beige saddle leather. This might not sound like much, but it really changes the look of the car: it now looks like a luxurious GT!

The presentation of this new FT-1 at Monterey is logical, since Toyota wants to gauge interest among potential buyers, and the Monterey Car Week attracts lots of people that have the kind of money to spend on this type of vehicle.

It is important to note that Toyota rarely builds a second version of a prototype. They did it for the Lexus LF-LC recently, and that one was later approved for production.

This is a good omen for the FT-1!
