We Are Getting Ready For The Next Toyota Yaris Sedan

Published on March 18, 2015 in New York by Frédérick Boucher-Gaulin

Toyota’s sub-compact, the Yaris, was never known for its dynamic capabilities. Just like its ancestor the Echo, it was a car that was made for sipping fuel and being easy to park, not for winning an autocross race.

Toyota’s most recent announcement could change that, however. The manufacturer just announced that the next iteration of the Yaris sedan would be presented shortly. If we are to believe the above image, it will boast an aggressive fascia while incorporating some styling cues from the brand’s other vehicles. As a reminder, the Yaris sedan was popular here, but was abandoned in 2013.

However, the rumours circulating around this car are quite interesting: the alliance between Toyota and Mazda that was announced a few years back could spawn a Yaris which would share its underpinnings with the Mazda2. If that were to happen, the car would also be equipped with the 1.5-litre Skyactiv engine. This radical architecture change could turn the Yaris into a fun-to-drive vehicle.

Toyota also announced that the production version of the Scion iM – a hatchback which was unveiled last year – would be shown alongside the Yaris sedan on March 31st, before being sent to the New York Auto Show. In the United States, the Yaris sedan will be known as the Scion iA.
