We Discover The 2016 BMW 7 Series
After being teased and leaked in the last few weeks, BMW’s flagship sedan, the 7 Series, has finally been launched.
The car boasts lines that, while not exactly revolutionary, are more modern. The 7 Series’ stature remains, and the car now features the brand’s iconic lowered fascia. Under its steel and aluminium skin, the car is built on a chassis made in part from carbon fibre; on certain versions, overall weight has been reduced by up to 130 kilos compared to the outgoing model.
Different engines are available, from efficient diesels and hybrids (some of them obviously won’t be offered here) all the way to a twin-turbo 4.4-litre V8 outputting 450 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque. With the latter, the sedan can get from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.4 seconds.
At the other end of the spectrum sits the 740e, a hybrid that uses a 2-litre four-cylinder engine coupled with a 95-horsepower electric motor. This enables the BMW to drive up to 40 km in all-electric mode, or sip fuel at a rate of 2.1 litres per 100 km.
As it’s now the tradition, there is a long wheelbase option: every car with the L moniker in its name will offer more room for the rear passengers.
Among the new technologies in the 2016 7 Series we find a self-parking system, laser headlights, inductive phone chargers and an upgraded iDrive system which can now track hand movements.
