Two New Mercedes-AMG C63 Coupes: One For The Road, One For The Track

Mercedes-Benz has been racing in DTM for a long time. Alongside its German rivals, the manufacturer builds racecars that battle it out on various tracks (if you have never seen a DTM race, I heartily recommend it; it’s a cross between the contact in NASCAR and the technicality of endurance racing). Since these cars have to be based on production models, we can be assured that when a new iteration of the sporty German saloons comes out, the DTM variant isn’t far behind.

With the arrival of the new C-Class, we were eager to see what the manufacturer would do to convert it into a racecar; here is the 2016 Mercedes-AMG C63 Coupe DTM.

It’s quite easy to discern this newcomer from a ‘’regular’’ C63; it has huge wheel arches hiding 18-inch wheels shod in Hankook tires, a body kit that includes many carbon fibre canards and a huge rear wing.

Built entirely out of carbon fibre, the car is protected by a tubular rollcage. Every panel is built out of carbon fibre, as are the brakes, the driveshaft and the clutch. The whole car weighs only 1,120 kg, which is only a few kilos heavier than an MX-5.

And since it houses a 4-litre V8 producing 490 horsepower at 7500 rpm, performance will be up to par.

And just in case you love the C63 Coupe DTM’s styling, but want to drive one on the street, Mercedes-AMG has something for you: the Edition 1. It will feature the same matte paint and yellow stripes, as well as wheels that closely resemble those found on the DTM. Available in S trim with 501 horsepower on tap, this Mercedes-AMG should be more than enough to satisfy the racer in you.
