They Did It! Toyota Builds a Hatchback 86

In the land of kangaroos and koalas, Toyota's people have gone mad. They asked the main office in Japan if they could take a Toyota 86 (formerly known here as the Scion FR-S) and create a one-off hatchback.

Don’t celebrate too quickly, though: Toyota has no intention to mass-produce this car. The 86 Shooting Brake is nothing more than a styling exercise built to gauge consumer interest.

With a perfect blend of sportiness and quirkiness, this Toyota isn’t a simple prototype, but a fully-working vehicle. They didn’t simply fit a fiberglass roof on it and call it a day; this car has been hand-made by Toyota Australia.

This one-off shooting brake will now join the convertible 86 that was pitched a few years back. It was suggested, built and then promptly forgotten.
If you still think that this vehicle has a chance of being produced, the Toyota 86’s lead engineer Tetsuya Tada said that they had no intention whatsoever of producing more variants of their sports car. However, he likes the fact that Toyota’s engineers show passion in designing a unique car.
