A Round of Changes for the 2017 Mazda3

After three years on the market in its current form, it was time for Mazda to give its popular compact a few improvements.

For 2017, the Mazda3 gets a slightly redesigned front fascia, although the changes are barely noticeable. We notice the edges of the grille’s chrome surround are now aligned directly with the headlight clusters, while the front bumper has also been revised. The look has been updated to draw a closer resemblance with the brand’s newer products such as the CX-3 and the CX-9. There are a few paint colour changes as well.

Inside, we find a new steering wheel, a driver instrumentation panel that’s clearer with a colour TFT-LCD display, a tire pressure monitor, revised seatback pockets and roomier front-door pockets. The GS trim now includes a heated steering wheel as well as the Smart City Brake Support system lifted from the GT’s Technology Package.

The Mazda3 GT benefits from LED headlights and a new fog lamp design, while the dual-zone climate control system is now standard. The Luxury Package is renamed Premium Package and adds adaptive cruise control, front obstruction warning, lane-keep assist in addition to several items taken from the Technology Package. The latter has been streamlined, but keeps the i-ELOOP regenerative braking system and adaptive headlights, but adds road sign recognition.

The car’s powertrains haven’t changed, but 2017 Mazda3 units equipped with the automatic transmission now get a Sport mode, activated by a console-mounted switch. However, the manufacturer is introducing a new technology called G-Vectoring Control, designed to enhance dynamic handling characteristics.

Pricing for the 2017 Mazda3 hasn’t been announced yet, athough the car will go on sale later this year.
