Mercedes-Benz E-Class All-Terrain: the Jacked-up Wagon

It is too early to claim victory, but is it me or is the station wagon slowly becoming cool again? After being stuck in the shadow of SUVs for too long, this type of vehicle is slowly regaining popularity.

As proof, manufacturers are now launching off-road versions of their wagons: Audi is still selling their A6 allroad (not in North America, of course) and Volvo just released their V90 Cross Country.

The most recent automaker to join the fray is Mercedes-Benz, who just showed the first pictures of its E-Class All-Terrain. Visually, the All-Terrain differs from the regular E-Class Wagon by its wider fenders and aluminum bumpers. It is also higher off the ground, with a clearance of between 121 and 156 mm (thanks to an adjustable suspension).

Every All-Terrain will get all-wheel drive as well as underbody protection plates. There is also a new drive mode, which optimizes the computer's various systems for off-road drives.

For now, Mercedes-Benz won't be selling this model in North America.
