All-New 2019 Audi Q3 is Like a Mini-Q8

Remember the sensational Audi Q8 crossover that debuted in late spring as the brand’s new flagship crossover—and which we tested in Chile’s Atacama Desert? Well, it looks like it just had a baby.

Meet the fully redesigned, second-generation 2019 Audi Q3. The smallest SUV in the lineup has gotten much sharper and more dynamic in terms of styling while offering more room and versatility than its predecessor to appease critics.

The most striking change can be seen up front, where the new Singleframe grille in octagon design is divided up by vertical bars and flanked by large air inlets. The redesigned, narrow headlights run inwards with their wedge shape and are available with Audi’s Matrix LED technology. The Q3 has also grown in virtually all dimensions and takes on a more athletic stance, which is accented by the rising beltline and colour-contrasting wheel arch trims. The revised treatment of the rear section further emphasizes the classy, yet masculine look.

Following a similar theme, the cabin of the 2019 Audi Q3 echoes in many ways the brand’s larger models, starting with the fully digital operating and display concept (no more analog instruments) centered on the standard 10.25-inch MMI touchscreen and its high-gloss black glass-look surround. Audi designers made sure that all displays, buttons and controls are located ergonomically and that the seats provide a sporty position.

The available navigation system has been improved, and those who love to spend time with their smartphone will surely like the new myAudi app, the integration of Apple Car Play/Android Auto and the possibility to charge their phone inductively via the vehicle’s antenna.

Not only is there more space inside the 2019 Audi Q3 thanks to the 77mm longer wheelbase, but the rear seats can be moved fore/aft by 150 mm to maximize either passenger room or cargo capacity. Folding the seatbacks down allows you to triple the amount of gear you can fit into the Q3 (from 530 to 1,525 litres). What’s more, the loading floor can be adjusted in three levels and a power tailgate is optional.

On the road, the adaptive cruise control system will be the highlight of the Q3’s assist systems. It incorporates the functions of adaptive speed assist, traffic jam assist and active lane assist. Four cameras covering 360 degrees will make parking manoeuvres easier, as well.

As far as the engine is concerned, look for the same 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder with direct injection, but upgraded from 200 to 230 horsepower. The current six-speed Tiptronic autobox will be replaced by a seven-speed dual-clutch S tronic unit sending power to the front wheels or all four. Audi has also revised the suspension for improved ride quality, although we don’t know which version we’ll get here.

The new 2019 Audi Q3 will be arriving at European dealerships in November, so expect a North American release in the spring of next year. Of course, we’ll keep you up to date when additional, Canadian-specific details become available.
