Jaguar Confirms a Second Electric Vehicle

While announcing plans to build a range of new electrified vehicles at its manufacturing plant in Castle Bromwich, U.K., Jaguar Land Rover today confirmed what its next all-electric vehicle will be.

The XJ full-size sedan, which is sold in more than 120 countries but currently being dropped from production after eight generations and 51 years on the market, will be reinvented as a battery-powered car in 2020.

The new XJ will build on the characteristics synonymous with its predecessors, namely a sophisticated design, smooth performance and world-class luxury. It will be created by the same team of designers and product development specialists responsible for the Jaguar I-PACE, voted as the 2019 World Car of the Year.

Notable here is Jaguar Land Rover’s next-generation Modular Longitudinal Architecture (MLA), which enables flexible production of clean efficient diesel and gasoline vehicles alongside fully electric and hybrid models.

“The future of mobility is electric and, as a visionary British company, we are committed to making our next generation of zero-emission vehicles in the U.K.,” said Ralf Speth, Chief Executive Officer of Jaguar Land Rover. “We are co-locating our electric vehicle manufacture, Electronic Drive Units and battery assembly to create a powerhouse of electrification in the Midlands.”

Today’s announcement is part of the automaker’s commitment to offer customers electrified options for all new Jaguar and Land Rover models starting next year. Meanwhile, the new battery assembly facility Speth was talking about will be operational in 2020 and have a capacity of 150,000 units.

It was also revealed last month that the electric drive units will be developed in a partnership with BMW.
