Another Jaguar Sports Car May be Coming

Jaguar unveiled the refreshed 2021 F-TYPE this week and has already started working on the next-generation model, but at the same time it would like to add a second sports car to its lineup.

At least that’s the wish of new design director Julian Thomson, who replaced Ian Callum a few months ago.

"Jaguar will always build sports cars. I'd love to do more than one," he told British magazine Auto Express.

Unfortunately, he didn’t specify which kind of sports car he envisions or how realistic the project is.

For Thomson, however, there will come a time where people get tired of SUVs and crossovers and turn to more exciting options.

"In this day and age of electrification and autonomous technology, a part of me thinks there may be a resurgence of people enjoying transportation for transportation's sake, and driving for driving's sake," he said. "Whether that makes the market bigger I don’t know, but I think there is a threat to volume production cars, and they are going to struggle to find a position on what they do. I’d hope that truly special and luxury cars, sports cars, will find a place where they have the option to be more exotic."

If Jaguar does launch another sports car—with an electrified powertrain, to boot—expect something much more sensible than a supercar like the new 2,000-horsepower Lotus Evija.

"I guess what's more difficult for us to understand is that you buy a sports car because you want something really interactive, and emotional engagement, so we're still thinking about what would be the electric sports car offering. It's not clear to us yet," Thomson added.
