More Details About Subaru’s Future Electric SUV

Are you disappointed with the electric range of the new Subaru Crosstrek PHEV? By 2020 standards, 27 kilometres is not very generous, indeed.

In June of last year, we told you that Subaru was going to team up with Toyota once again to develop a joint EV platform and a fully electric compact SUV to be sold under each company’s own brand.

At a technical meeting in January, Subaru presented a design study. And now, reports from Japan picked up by CarBuzz shine a little more light on the vehicle.

Apparently, the production model will be called “Evoltis” (Subaru filed to trademark the name in the U.S. back in 2018 but has yet to use it). Output could be somewhere around 280 horsepower, maybe even more, and all-wheel drive would allegedly be included as standard.

The more interesting number is the range. According to the same reports, drivers could expect to travel close to 500 kilometres on a full charge. It is possible that number is based on Japanese testing cycles, but even if it drops to, say, 400 kilometres in Canada, we’d be quite pleased.

Styling promises to be aggressive while Subaru’s next-generation EyeSight safety system will include additional driver assistance features.

In the most likely scenario, the Subaru Evoltis (or whatever name the vehicle ends up with) will make its global debut at the next Tokyo Auto Show in October 2021. However, it probably won’t hit the market until the middle part of the decade.
