The Best New Car Warranties in 2020

Published on June 11, 2020 in Tips & Advice: Protect your car by Guillaume Rivard

For new-car shoppers who don’t want to spend too much money on repairs and replacement parts, a solid warranty can heavily influence the final purchase decision.

Once again, CAA-Quebec has analyzed the various warranties offered by automakers—limited vehicle warranty, powertrain warranty, emission control warranty, corrosion warranty, seat belt and airbag warranty, electric or hybrid system warranty—and posted the results on its website, highlighting those with the best coverage across the industry.

Among the highlights, Mitsubishi still offers the longest powertrain warranty at 10 years/160,000 km. Along with Hyundai, Kia and Genesis, it’s also one of the only manufacturers that cover the entire vehicle for 5 years/100,000 km (except audio system components, which are backed for 3 years/60,000 km).

If you’re a big driver, Mazda’s unlimited mileage warranty could be a boon. It’s offered exclusively in Canada.

Audi, BMW, Fiat-Chrysler, Jaguar, Kia, Land Rover, Lexus, Mazda, MINI, Mitsubishi and Porsche have all dropped their surface rust warranty in 2020, just like Alfa Romeo and Volkswagen did last year. Perforations are still covered, fortunately.

When it comes to electric vehicles, there are still many differences between EV battery warranties. And for many automakers, replacement battery capacity is not clear.

CAA-Quebec also reminds car owners to check and comply with the various conditions set by automakers to preserve their warranties, as we explained earlier this week. Following the prescribed maintenance schedule is just the start.
