2022 Hyundai Tucson Makes North American Debut, Tucson N Line Teased

Following the world premiere of the fourth-generation 2022 Tucson in mid-September, Hyundai today revealed a whole lot of information about the model that will go on sale in North America next spring.

First, the standard Tucson will feature a new 2.5-litre four-cylinder Smartstream engine rated at 187 horsepower and 178 pound-feet of torque—up 6 hp and 3 lb-ft from the optional 2.4-litre engine in the outgoing Tucson. The automatic transmission gains two more gears for a total of eight, while the available HTRAC all-wheel drive system offers Normal, Sport and Smart modes. Expect more agile handling and a more refined driving experience overall.

The new Tucson Hybrid will arrive at the same time, combining a 1.6-litre turbo engine with a 44-kW electric motor. It’s said to deliver 226 horsepower, 258 pound-feet of torque and 30-percent better fuel economy.

In late summer, we should see the Tucson Plug-In Hybrid land in showrooms with a 13.8-kWh battery providing 51 kilometres of zero-emission range—less than the Toyota RAV4 Prime (68) and Ford Escape PHEV (61). Level-2 charging will take no more than two hours using a 7.2-kW on-board charger.

As previously reported, a wide array of safety and driver assistance features will be included. The 2022 Hyundai Tucson will be the first SUV in its class to offer remote parking assist (to get in or out of tight parking spaces with the driver outside of the vehicle), remote start with heated and ventilated front seats, an app that turns your smartphone into a digital key, as well as wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay integration.

Last but not least, Hyundai has released a few teasers for the Tucson N Line, a performance variant that will also be available in spring 2021. Styling will be more aggressive and distinctive, of course, but the company is keeping quiet about the engine under the hood.

It will join the Sonata N Line and Elantra N Line, plus the Veloster N and the future Elantra N. In fact, seven new N and N Line models are planned through the 2022 calendar year including three purist N models and four N Line models.
