2022 BMW M5 CS Arrives as Most Powerful BMW Ever
BMW is never kidding around when it comes to the almighty M5. The latest edition introduced for 2021 generates 600 horsepower, while the M5 Competition—the only model available in Canada—packs 617 horsepower.
You think the German automaker would stop there? Wrong. Meet the new and extreme 2022 M5 CS, the most powerful production BMW vehicle ever made.

The twin-turbocharged 4.4-litre V8 has been tuned to deliver 627 horsepower at 6,000 rpm. Max torque is still rated at 553 pound-feet, but accessible across a slightly wider range (1,800-5,950 rpm). The engine redline is 7,200 rpm.
BMW engineers have also reduced the weight of the car by 230 pounds through increased use of carbon fibre-reinforced plastics. Consequently, 0-100 km/h sprints are achieved in three seconds flat—three tenths quicker than the M5 Competition—and 0-200 km/h takes 10.3 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited at 305 km/h.
By the way, power is controlled by an eight-speed M Steptronic automatic transmission with Drivelogic and the rear-biased M xDrive all-wheel drive system. The Active M Differential further optimizes power between the rear wheels for maximum grip and lateral dynamics. The driver can also select from three xDrive modes including 4WD, 4WD Sport and 2WD.
As far as the chassis is concerned, the BMW M5 CS receives further spring and Dynamic Damper Control tuning over the M5 Competition to take advantage of the lower vehicle weight and the optional Pirelli P Zero Corsa high-performance tires. The Gold Bronze 20-inch M forged Y-spoke wheels are simply gorgeous.
Naturally, the driver can set everything up through the 12.3-inch centre display and create two distinct profiles that will later be easy to activate by pressing the red M1 or M2 button on the steering wheel. It’s also possible to toggle swiftly between the ROAD, SPORT and TRACK settings using the M Mode button. In TRACK mode, driver assistance system intervention is turned off. The audio system and centre control display are turned off, too, so the driver may concentrate on the road ahead.
What else? Well, as you can see, there are a number of Gold Bronze accents on the outside. The M Carbon ceramic brakes provide exceptional thermal stability, resistance to fade and improved wear while also reducing weight by 51 pounds when compared to the standard M Compound brakes found on the M5 Competition model. The six-piston fixed front calipers and single-piston rear floating calipers can be painted in either red or gold.
Inside, the M5 CS features a four-passenger seating configuration for the first time with M carbon sport seats up front and two individual bucket seats for the rear passengers. The headrests of all four seating positions are imprinted with a map of the Nürburgring’s Nordschleife, a cool reminder of where the car’s development took place.
The 2022 BMW M5 will be limited to one model-year only and go on sale in the second half of 2021. Canadian pricing starts at $165,900.
