Redesigned Honda HR-V Makes Global Debut
Honda today unveiled the new generation of its small crossover, the HR-V—at least the variant that will go on sale in Europe and its home market of Japan where it’s known as Vezel.
The automaker has previously said that the North American HR-V will have a specific design in order to better meet our needs and requirements, but consider this a good preview.

A radical departure from the current HR-V, the new model boasts a much sportier stance and silhouette, as foreshadowed by the teasers we saw in recent weeks. While its exact dimensions were not specified, it’s safe to assume the vehicle is larger now.
The front end is more upright, with a redesigned grille and headlights that make the HR-V look wider and more sophisticated—not unlike Mazda products. The body sides have a cleaner look, too, and they’re punctuated by more modern wheel designs.
The rear door handles are still concealed within the roof pillars and the rear hatch has a more sloping profile to accentuate the impression of a coupe. We wonder how much cargo capacity is affected, though.
Under the available panoramic roof, you’ll find a cockpit that’s reminiscent of the sketch showing the interior of the upcoming 2022 Honda Civic. The minimalist dashboard incorporates new controls and buttons as well as a nine-inch centre display up top. Good news: Honda’s flip-up/fold-down Magic Seat in the rear has been retained.
As for power, the new HR-V was introduced with a hybrid system featuring a 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine and electric motor, but don’t expect to see it in Canada. Will the current 1.8-litre mill producing 141 horsepower and 127 pound-feet of torque be back? We’ll find out later. FWD and AWD models will again be offered, though.
Overseas, sales of the next-gen Honda HR-V will begin in April. Our variant should debut sometime in the next few months and possibly arrive at dealerships this fall as a 2022 model. Keep following The Car Guide for more details!
