Confirmed: Chevrolet Silverado ZR2 to Debut This Fall

Published on June 30, 2021 in News by Guillaume Rivard

While Chevrolet is known to be working on a Silverado EV in a response to Ford’s F-150 Lightning, we’re still waiting for a dedicated off-road pickup that can take on the F-150 Raptor directly, since the Colorado ZR2 is not quite in the same league.

Well, the wait will soon be over: the company has just announced that a Silverado ZR2 is coming this fall!

We knew something was up after seeing camouflaged prototypes being tested around the Detroit area in the past few months, but now it’s official. Chevrolet posted a short teaser on Twitter to get fans even more excited.

Expect the ZR2 to be based on the Silverado Trail Boss and receive plenty of upgraded components such as 35-inch tires, Multimatic dampers and extra skid plates. Also, the suspension will be lifted and equipped with longer arms allowing increased wheel travel and articulation for the type of off-road driving no other Silverado is designed. Approach, breakover and departure angles will be improved, as well.

Now, what about the engine? Hopefully the Chevrolet Silverado ZR2 will at least get a modified version of the 6.2-litre V8 (420 horsepower, 460 pound-feet of torque), because the F-150 Raptor (450 horsepower, 510 pound-feet) won’t show any mercy, let alone the upcoming Raptor R that’s projected to deliver around 700 horsepower. And we haven’t yet mentioned the 702-horsepower Ram 1500 TRX.

Considering that the reveal is scheduled for this fall, we will probably see the Silverado ZR2 hit the market early next year as a 2022 model. Keep following The Car Guide for all the latest news.
