Volkswagen Canada has just announced pricing details for the all-new 2022 Golf GTI and Golf R, which are expected to reach dealers this fall.

Now, the tough question: which one will you choose? Remember, the base Golf is not returning to Canada.

2022 Golf GTI

Available in nine different body colours including Kings Red Metallic pictured here, the 2022 Volkswagen Golf GTI starts at $31,495 with the six-speed manual transmission and $32,895 with the seven-speed DSG. It features 17-inch wheels, LED headlights and taillights as well as signature plaid cloth sport seats with integrated front head restraints. An eight-inch infotainment screen is paired with the 10.25-inch Volkswagen Digital Cockpit Pro.

The entry-level GTI can be optioned with a panoramic sunroof and larger 18-inch wheels as part of a package for $1,350.

Next up is the GTI Autobahn, which costs $34,995 with the manual gearbox and $36,395 with the DSG. This one adds standard 18-inch wheels, adaptive front lighting, illuminated grille, 10-inch infotainment screen with navigation, voice control and Dynamic Road Sign Display. There’s a package priced at $1,800 that includes a panoramic sunroof, 19-inch wheels with summer performance tires and a 480-watt harman/kardon premium audio system.

Finally, the top-line GTI Performance retails from $38,995 (manual) or $40,395 (DSG). It comes out of the box with 19-inch wheels on summer performance tires, adaptive dampers, Vienna leather seating surfaces, ventilated front seats, harman/kardon premium audio, head-up display and parking assistant. Once again, the panoramic sunroof is optional. It will cost you an extra $1,250.

All 2022 Golf GTI models boast a turbocharged 2.0-litre direct-injection TSI engine that now produces 241 horsepower—up 13 from the outgoing generation—and 273 pound-feet of torque. Power is distributed to the front wheels and an electronically controlled torque-sensing limited-slip differential comes standard.

2022 Golf R

Meanwhile, the 2022 Volkswagen Golf R comes in a single trim level priced at $44,995 for the manual transmission and $46,395 for the DSG. Aside from a choice of three body colours including Lapiz Blue Metallic, the only other option is a panoramic sunroof at $1,250.

The features are roughly similar to those on the most expensive Golf GTI, except with distinctive elements such as blue-painted brake callipers and matte aluminum trim. Further highlights include a two-piece rear spoiler, Nappa leather sport seats and a sport steering wheel with buttons for the additional drive modes.

The gorgeous 19-inch wheels are wrapped in summer performance tires and controlled by a new R-Performance 4MOTION all-wheel-drive system that can precisely distribute up to 100 percent of the rear torque to an individual rear wheel. The Golf R now makes 315 horsepower—27 more than the previous generation—and either 280 or 295 pound-feet of torque (not 310 as previously reported) depending on whether the manual or DSG transmission is selected.
