2022 Volkswagen Jetta Gets New Engine, Fresh Look
The Volkswagen Jetta is getting a few notable changes and upgrades for the 2022 model year, and Canadian customers will be able to order one starting this fall.
Thanks to our sedan-loving neighbours south of the border, the German compact car won’t suffer the same fate as the standard Golf, which will no longer be offered on this side of the Atlantic.

New Engine
First of all, the refreshed Jetta adopts the turbocharged 1.5-litre EA211 engine found in the recently launched 2022 Taos small SUV. While torque is the same at 184 pound-feet, output is up 11 horsepower from the outgoing 1.4-litre unit, for a total of 158 horsepower.
Volkswagen once again promises excellent fuel economy, though the official ratings have yet to be posted. Customers will still have the choice of a six-speed manual and eight-speed automatic transmission.
For those who want increased performance, the 2022 Jetta GLI returns with a 2.0-litre EA888 engine producing 228 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed manual transmission is standard and a seven-speed DSG dual-clutch transmission is optional.
Fresh Look
Both models get a styling update starting with revised front and rear bumpers. The new grille has two distinctive chrome bars flanking the VW logo. On the GLI, its characteristic red accent strip sits between the bars. LED headlights and daytime running lights are standard, with top-trim Jetta models and GLI having projector LEDs.
For 2022, the Jetta is available in seven exterior colours including new Kings Red Metallic, Oryx White Metallic and Rising Blue Metallic inspired by Volkswagen’s latest products. Additionally, there are unique wheels on each trim, ranging from 16-inch aluminum alloys on the Jetta Trendline to 18-inch sport alloys as standard on GLI.
More Tech Inside
Inside, the Volkswagen Digital Cockpit instrument cluster now comes as standard with an eight-inch display on Jetta Trendline and Comfortline trims, and the 10-inch, fully configurable Digital Cockpit Pro on Jetta Highline and GLI models. All Jettas except the base model feature standard Car-Net remote connectivity and MIB3 infotainment along with wireless charging.
New cloth seats can be found in the Jetta Trendline, while the Jetta GLI features a new leather-wrapped sport steering wheel with touch functions and a red “GLI” clip.
Canadian pricing for the 2022 Volkswagen Jetta and Jetta GLI will be announced closer to launch.
