Chevrolet Unveils 1,004-hp Crate Engine

It’s hard to find an automaker other than General Motors working on such completely opposite projects right now. On one hand, GM is touting formidable next-generation electric vehicles like the GMC Hummer EVCadillac LYRIQ and Chevrolet Silverado EV. On the other hand, some of its engineers are pushing the combustion engine to the extreme.

Chevrolet Performance today unveiled arguably the mother of all crate engines for tuners and drag racers all across North America.

Codenamed “ZZ632/1000,” it’s a big-block pushrod V8 that displaces 632 cubic inches. If you prefer the metric system, that represents 10.35 litres. Yeah. This mill is even bigger than the ZZ572 unit found in the 2022 COPO Camaro (572 cubic inches or 9.4 litres) that debuted in the summer.

Hold on to your hats because output is rated at 1,004 horsepower—four more horsepower than Mopar’s “Hellephant” V8 which has 426 cubic inches (7.0 litres). Max torque amounts to 876 pound-feet, which isn’t as impressive as the 950 pound-feet generated by its supercharged rival. The engine revs to 7,000 rpm and doesn’t need race fuel as 93-octane premium gas will suffice.

Chevy used the same cast iron block as the ZZ572, but with a slight bore increase and a significant stroke increase. The engine boasts a forged steel crankshaft and connecting rods along with forged aluminum pistons.

Chevrolet Performance dealers will begin sales early in 2022, though pricing has yet to be announced. In the meantime, there’s a chance we could see this monster under the hood of a few concepts at the 2021 SEMA Show in Las Vegas from November 2-5.
