All-new Mazda CX-50 to Debut Nov. 15, Here’s What to Expect
As previously reported, Mazda plans to launch five new SUVs globally by the end of 2023. Three of them will be available in Canada starting with the Mazda CX-50. The official reveal is coming very soon. It will all take place on Monday, November 15, just a couple of days before Media Days at the 2021 Los Angeles Auto Show.
What do we know about the CX-50 so far? And what should be expect?

First of all, this model will be sold alongside the popular CX-5, offering a wider stance, roomier interior and more robust AWD system, the automaker has hinted.
Built at the new Mazda-Toyota joint venture factory in Huntsville, Alabama starting in January 2022, the CX-50 will share its platform with the Mazda3, CX-30 and CX-5 instead of getting Mazda’s new longitudinal architecture for large vehicles. The latter will underpin two brand new midsize SUVs set to come after the CX-50, namely the two-row CX-70 and the three-row CX-90.

The interior should be similar to that of the latest Mazda products, meaning with a non-touchscreen controlled by a rotary dial and buttons on the centre console. According to the company, this type of interface helps reduce distractions while driving. The problem is that Mazda’s infotainment system is far from being the most user-friendly on the market. Hopefully some improvements will be made with the CX-50.
What about the engines? It’s safe to expect the same selection as with the CX-5—a naturally aspirated 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine and a turbocharged variant. Forget the new turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine and plug-in hybrid option that have been announced for the CX-70 and CX-90.
As for the “more robust” AWD system Mazda is talking about, we’re intrigued. The current i-Activ system has proven to be capable in most situations. What kind of enhancements do Mazda engineers have in store for the CX-50? And will the vehicle be more adventure-ready, as suggested by the Twitter clip above showing a kayak on the roof?
One thing’s for sure, the new Mazda intelligent Drive Select (Mi-Drive) function introduced on the updated 2022 CX-5 will be included, allowing drivers to select the most appropriate drive mode to optimize driving capability with one touch of a switch.
