2022 Toyota Tundra Capstone Takes Luxury to New Heights

The completely redesigned 2022 Toyota Tundra arrived in Canadian dealerships last month with a more comprehensive lineup than ever. Now, the company is adding a new model that will tower above the rest.

Called Capstone, it’s the pinnacle of Tundra pickups, even more luxurious than the Platinum and 1794 Edition. Consider it a more direct threat to the Ford F-150 Limited and Ram 1500 Limited, not to mention the new GMC Sierra Denali Ultimate.

First, you’ll notice the 22-inch chrome wheels and unique front grille, the latter featuring a body-coloured outer frame and a chrome inner mesh pattern. The mirror caps, “TUNDRA” tailgate lettering and other exterior accents sport a chrome finish, as well.

Power running boards provide easier access to the cabin and cargo bed. Perforated semi-aniline leather seats in a black-and-white combination highlight the interior along with open-pore Dark American Walnut wood trim on the centre console and passenger-side dash.

On the dash the Walnut inlay surrounds a Capstone logo which illuminates when the doors are opened. Speaking of letting a little light in, a panoramic moonroof is standard. Also, the new Capstone is the only Tundra model to feature acoustic glass on the front doors for improved noise insulation.

Drivers will be facing a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel, 10-inch colour head-up display and 14-inch high-definition touchscreen powered by Toyota’s brand new multimedia system. With the Intelligent Assistant available through Drive Connect, you can use a simple phrase like “Hey Toyota” to awaken the system for voice-activated commands.

Of course, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are also part of the package. A 12-speaker JBL premium sound system comes standard.

Hybrid Only

The 2022 Tundra Capstone will be offered in a single body configuration, namely the CrewMax with a 5.5-foot bed. Available colours include Wind Chill Pearl, Magnetic Gray Metallic, Celestial Silver Metallic, Midnight Black Metallic, Supersonic Red and Blueprint.

Likewise, there’s just one option under the hood. Toyota’s new i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain combines a twin-turbo V6 with an electric motor to produce 437 horsepower and 583 pound-feet of torque. Maximum towing capacity is rated at 4,690 kilograms (10,340 pounds), and both Trailer Back Guidance and Straight Path Assist are included as standard.

One last thing: like all Tundra models, this one gets the Toyota Safety Sense 2.5 suite of advanced safety and driver assistance features. The list includes a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection (with multiple enhancements over the previous generation), automatic emergency braking, emergency steering assist, adaptive cruise control, lane tracing assist and more.

The 2022 Toyota Tundra Capstone will go on sale this spring. Expect pricing to start somewhere in the high $70,000 range.
