Have You Forgotten About the Hyundai Genesis ?

Published on May 31, 2022 in Pre-owned vehicles by The Car Guide

Before Genesis became Hyundai’s luxury brand, the name was on a high-end model in the Korean manufacturer’s catalogue. But in order to distinguish itself and rival with other well-established competitors, the Genesis had its own emblem instead of wearing the mother company’s.

Sold from 2009 to 2016, the sedan couldn't compete despite its sleek silhouette, comprehensive equipment and impressive build quality. But the know-how acquired along the way explains why the Genesis brand has so much credibility today.

For less than $25,000, if not $20,000, you can now get a hold of an attractive specimen, and the 2015 redesign made it even more exciting with a timeless interior, not to mention the standard all-wheel drive system. However, you could get an early model for less than $10,000, which shows the strong depreciation the first Hyundai Genesis have been subjected to.

The 3.8-litre V6 and the 4.6-litre V8 started with 290 and 375 horsepower respectively. The first was increased to 311 horsepower towards the end of its career, while the second was upgraded to a 5.0-litre displacement and 420 horsepower. This last engine was the one powering the Genesis G90 until 2022.

The Hyundai Genesis is a great option for those who want to drive a stylish, comfortable and well-equipped car that costs much less than its German competitors.

And What About the Coupe?

For 2010, Hyundai also launched a coupe to replace—or rather obscure—the Tiburon. Weirdly enough, the company decided to call it the Genesis Coupe, even though it was intended for an entirely different customer base than the sedan, with a more agile handling and a more distinguished style, in the same vein as the Infiniti G Coupe.

The engines available were a 2.0-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder with 210 horsepower (not exactly mind-blowing), and the aforementioned 3.8-litre V6, which produced 306 horsepower. They were respectively increased to 274 and 348 horsepower in mid-generation and delivered quite decent performances.

If you are looking for a two-door sports car that combines good handling with great value, you should definitely take a look at the Genesis Coupe.
