This Could Be the Car Colour of the Future in North America

Every year, designers from auto paint supplier BASF study future trends and create a new collection to inspire automotive designers around the globe. They draw inspiration from industry, fashion, consumer products, nature, technology and more.

At the 2022 North American International Auto Show in Detroit last week, the company unveiled a car mock-up presenting the trendy colour for Canada and the U.S. in the next few years: LAVA.

The volcanic grey hue, which is not unlike the all-new 2024 Ford Mustang introduced at the same event, only a bit darker and warmer, embodies “visions of progress” and a crossroads of high technology and sustainability. We’ll spare you the more detailed and more philosophical description included in BASF’s press release.

What do you think? For sure, grey remains one of the most popular colours among car shoppers in North America, and this particular shade features red undertones, but isn’t it a tad depressing that the trend is likely to grow in the coming years despite exciting and electrified new models hitting the market?  

The trendy colours envisioned by BASF for other parts of the globe are much brighter and livelier, as you can see in the photo gallery up top. They include some sort of rose gold for South America, ivory white for Asia, lime yellow for China, and golden yellow for Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
