Mazda Vision Study May Hint at Electric MX-5 of the Future
Mazda is going to invest 1.5 trillion yen (approx. $14 billion CAD) in electrification globally by 2030 and possibly start building electric vehicles in the U.S. as early as 2026 or 2027, using a dedicated new architecture developed in-house.
More details specific to the Canadian market have also come to light, as we reported in a separate story, but there’s another thing that caught our attention in today’s announcement.

The Japanese automaker posted a pair of images showing what it calls a “Vision Study Model,” which definitely has the looks of an electric MX-5 straight out of the future. The car can be seen at the end of a long video presentation by Mazda. To save you some time, here’s the key segment:
We know that Mazda is working on the fifth-generation MX-5, but this concept (which will likely resurface at some point in the next year) appears to be much farther down the pipeline. To be clear, there’s no confirmation that this is a futuristic take on the MX-5, but the proportions and styling suggest it is. Alternatively, we could be looking at an entirely different car or some sort of video game creation.
Of course, Mazda has pulled similar tricks in the past with no production models ever seeing the light of day. Remember the RX-Vision and Vision Coupe concepts? The Vision Study Model is just that—a design study. An extremely attractive one, granted.
Hopefully Mazda designers will use it as inspiration for the new MX-5 or the one after that. The future sure looks exciting.
