The Car Guide Podcast: Is the CES Killing the Detroit Auto Show ?

Published on January 16, 2023 in News by Louis-Philippe Dubé

The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas is the mecca of the electronics world. In recent years, however, automakers and automotive aftermarket manufacturers have taken the event by storm year after year, unveiling new models, concepts and technologies to the world - and leaving the traditional auto shows, like the NAIAS in the Detroit, behind.

In this 7th episode of The Car Guide Podcast, LP and Gab discuss the unveiling of the BMW I Vision Dee concept - a vehicle wrapped in a special dynamic film that enables the body to change colours, but dissect interesting newcomers like the Project Arrow, an all-Canadian concept put together by some of the country’s best component manufacturers.

The Consumer Electronics Show also hosted the Ram 1500 BEV, AFEELA EV, Peugeot Inception and Fiat 500e concepts all of which are 100% electric (obviously). Select manufacturers like Volvo and Chrysler took the stage to unveil new technologies.

And last but (definitely) not least, Volkswagen was one of the stars of the show with the inveiling of the ID.7 sedan.

Our hosts also discuss record sales at ultra-luxury brands such as Rolls-Royce and Bugatti. This success can be attributed to post-pandemic revenge spending, but also to the fact that both brands have adapted to their clienteles in terms of technologies. The Canadian government has also announced that auto manufacturers will have to ensure that at least 20% of new cars, SUVs and pickups sales be zero-emission by 2026.

LP reports on his recent 2023 Porsche Macan T test-drive. What's particular about this vehicle is that it was spec'd by the team at The Car Guide. You won't find 18-way adjustable seats, or fancy head-up displays in this one; the T being a purist model, every option is aimed at performance and value. Gab lays out his impressions of the 2023 Volvo C40, the "coupe" version of the XC40 Recharge.
