2024 Mazda CX-90: Five Things to Know

Published on February 6, 2023 in Previews by Dominic Boucher

The all-new 2024 Mazda CX-90 is the Japanese brand’s largest and most luxurious vehicle yet, riding on a new platform and complete with many advanced technologies including a pair of e-Skyactiv powertrains.

Here are five things you should know about this three-door crossover, which will go on sale in Canada this spring:

Dignified Design

The CX-90’s large platform allows for a wider body and fenders as well as a longer wheelbase, accentuating its strong stance and further emphasizing its sense of performance. The body is designed to be sleek with crafted curves that give the CX-90 ever-changing expressions created by the reflections of lights and shadows.

Chrome garnishes on the lower bumpers are available along with 21-inch diamond-cut wheels featuring a black metallic finish. Also being introduced with the CX-90 is Mazda's latest Takuminuri colour, Artisan Red.

New Architecture

The CX-90 is built on an all-new large platform that features a front-engine, rear-wheel-bias longitudinal layout to elevate Mazda's signature driving performance, the company says.

Focus was put toward optimizing rigidity across the entire vehicle body, while meticulously designing the seats and suspension to provide better balance and control in a range of driving situations. A new eight-speed transmission and i-Activ all-wheel drive are both standard.

Two New Engines

The CX-90 is available with an all-new 3.3-litre inline-six e-Skyactiv Turbo engine, which produces 340 horsepower and 369 lb-ft. of torque when using the recommended premium fuel. This engine also is equipped with M-Hybrid Boost, a mild-hybrid system.

Alternatively, the new e-Skyactiv PHEV powertrain, tuned specifically for the North American market, delivers 323 horsepower and 369 lb-ft. of torque (again when using the recommended premium fuel). A 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine combines with an electric motor and 17.8kWh high-voltage battery. Zero-emission range is not specified yet.

Last summer, our colleague Antoine Joubert drove the Euro-only Mazda CX-60 equipped with the PHEV system and managed to travel 56 kilometres on pure battery power. Granted, the CX-90 is heavier and likely won’t achieve such impressive numbers, but Mazda’s technology looks like the real deal, for sure.

Premium Interior

The premium feel of the CX-90 is best appreciated inside. From the front seats to the available captain's chairs, and into the third row, there are multiple materials, such as Nappa leather, wood and tone-on-tone fabrics that all come together harmoniously.

One highlight is the distinctive fabric on the dash connected using hanging stitches, which is specifically inspired by hand-bookbinding and an intricate Japanese weaving technique known as Kumihimo.

By the way, the CX-90 offers seating for up to eight, while the 12.3-inch display up front has touchscreen capability with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto only (Mazda’s own infotainment system can be controlled by using the large dial on the centre console).

Plenty of Advanced Safety Features

When it comes to protecting occupants, the CX-90 seeks to maintain the same top safety recognition as Mazda's other products with many standard i-Activsense safety features such as automatic emergency braking, blind spot monitoring and adaptive cruise control. Don’t miss the available See-Through View monitor, which is meant to assist in a variety of parking situations.

Pricing for the 2024 Mazda CX-90 will be announced closer to launch.
