2024 BMW X2 is Sleeker, Bigger and More Powerful
A bigger and brawnier BMW X2 surfaced online today, two weeks before officially making its global debut at the Japan Mobility Show in Tokyo. It will go on sale in Canada in March of next year.
For its second generation, the coupe-style crossover stands out from the more conventional X1 with unique headlights and taillights, plus a redesigned, hex-shaped kidney grille that is optionally illuminated. In terms of size, the new X2 is 66 mm longer than the X1 and exceeds the previous generation by 193 mm, which is huge. The wheelbase, tracks, width and height have also been increased significantly, while the windshield and rear window are more heavily raked.

Sharper lines and a tauter body give the X2 more character. The available M Sport package (optional on xDrive28i, standard on M35i xDrive) cranks things up with larger air intakes, side skirts, a distinctive rear bumper with integrated diffuser, adaptive M suspension, M sport brakes and 19-inch M light-alloy wheels. Customers can select 20- or 21-inch wheels, as well, the latter being the largest ever fitted on the X2.
More Space and Tech
The 2024 BMW X2 is not only bigger on the outside, but also roomier inside, including a notable gain in legroom for rear passengers. Trunk capacity is increased, too, with 716 litres behind the 40/20/40-split rear seats and 1,470 litres overall.
Up front, the curved display pairs a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster with a 10.7-inch centre touchscreen. BMW’s latest infotainment system, iDrive 9, is said to be easier and more pleasant to use with a flat menu structure, but there’s still a ton of apps and functions to get used to. The virtual assistant is improved—naturally formulated spoken instructions can now be used to adjust the air conditioning, for instance. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto will likely make many drivers happy.
The new X2 will allow users to stream content or play video games (through a collaboration with gaming platform AirConsole) when parked. Also, an optionally available overhead interior camera makes it possible to take pictures and record videos or check inside the vehicle using the My BMW app.
As for the seats, they’ve been redesigned to provide more comfort and support, including the available sport seats. Synthetic leather (with Alcantara inserts in M35i xDrive trim) is applied throughout.
More Power, No iX2 for Canada
The 2024 BMW X2 carries over its turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engines, but engineers have revised the combustion chamber and fuel injection system. The base X2 xDrive28i now generates 241 horsepower and 295 lb-ft. of torque, accelerating from 0-100 km/h in 6.5 seconds. The transmission is a seven-speed, dual-clutch unit that comes with a mechanical limited-slip differential.
Meanwhile, the X2 M35i bumps output to 312 horsepower while torque stays at 295 lb-ft. It can reach 100 km/h in just 5.4 seconds and charm your ears in the process thanks to the quad tailpipes of the M exhaust system. Just like models specified with the M Sport package, the left-hand paddle is also used to activate the Sport Boost function enabling faster mid-range sprints.
A fully electric iX2 is part of the lineup for the first time, but similar to the iX1 and iX3, BMW has no plans to offer this variant in Canada.
What else? Well, BMW claims there has been a notable improvement in agility and cornering dynamics, as well as in long-distance comfort when compared to the previous model. Elsewhere, the latest version of the Forward Collision Mitigation system brings additional functions and enhanced detection capability. Active Blind Spot Detection is now standard, and there is a new exit warning function.
