Upcoming Mazda CX-70 Delayed, New Electric SUV Still Due by 2025

Two years ago, Mazda said that three new SUVs would go on sale in Canada and the U.S. by the end of 2023. The compact CX-50 and the three-row CX-90 are already here and performing quite well, but the CX-70 is still missing. In fact, we haven’t even seen it yet.

So, what’s the deal? Mazda North America CEO Tom Donnelly confirmed this week that the two-row SUV’s market launch has been pushed back to 2024, without being more specific.

Similar to the CX-90, the CX-70 will be available with a new turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine featuring M-Hybrid Boost mild hybrid technology, as well as a plug-in hybrid system.

The PHEV combines a naturally aspirated 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine with a 68kW electric motor and 17.8kWh battery. In addition to delivering 323 horsepower and 369 lb-ft. of torque, which are quite fun to exploit in Sport mode, this greener option enables 42 km of zero-emission range in ideal conditions.

Interestingly, the two vehicles will be the same size. Earlier this year, Mazda released an official document that referred to a "two-row model with the same body [as the CX-90]."

Also in 2024, Mazda’s plan calls for the addition of a CX-50 Hybrid. Built at a joint Mazda-Toyota assembly plant in Alabama, it will borrow Toyota technology as Mazda executives previously announced. Then, in 2025, Donnelly confirmed a second electric vehicle will join the lineup in North America, with much better range and capacities than the small MX-30. Four new hybrid models will also debut.

Back to the CX-70: it’s not impossible that a reveal will take place before the end of this year, either at the Los Angeles Auto Show (November 17-26) or later. Keep following The Car Guide to stay up-to-date on the latest Mazda news.
