Jeep Wrangler EV Reportedly Coming in 2028

Following the tentative deal between Stellantis and the United Auto Workers (UAW) in the U.S., we know a bit more about the automaker’s future plans.

As reported in a previous story, the Belvidere, Illinois assembly plant that stopped making the Jeep Cherokee earlier this year will build a new midsize pickup (presumably a Ram model) in the near future. An EV battery factory will also be added next to the site.

What will these batteries be for? A likely recipient is the electric Jeep Wrangler. Remember, the company has previously said it wants to electrify its entire lineup by mid-decade (there’s a chance that target could be pushed back a bit). Jeep’s first fully electric model, based on the Recon concept, is due to launch by late 2024.

According to information shared by the UAW, the Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid will receive an upgrade for 2025, then a new generation will arrive in 2028 with not one but two electric powertrain options. One of them will include a combustion engine as a range extender.

Curiously, there is no mention of a gas-powered or hybrid variant, suggesting that the next Wrangler will be an EV exclusively. All of this has yet to be confirmed, though, and it’s possible that Jeep’s plans will change as demand evolves.

What about some of the Wrangler’s siblings? The full-size Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer are expected to get a mid-cycle refresh in 2025 followed by another update in 2027, a year before the current generation is projected to end. Around mid-decade, a range-extending electric variant will reportedly debut, while a full EV will come two years after that. These models will challenge the upcoming Cadillac Escalade IQ and battery-electric Range Rover.

Also according to the UAW, the next-generation Grand Cherokee will come out in 2027 with both gasoline and electric powertrains. The Dodge Durango, which is built at the same factory in Detroit, will do the same a year earlier.

Stellantis, which does not comment on future products, has yet to make official announcements.
