2025 BMW 5 Series Adds Cheaper i5, PHEV Model Returns

Published on January 31, 2024 in Hybrid/Plug-in Hybrid by Guillaume Rivard

Completely redesigned for 2024, the BMW 5 Series is now available in both gas and electric configurations, the latter called i5. One year later, the German midsize luxury sedan adds two electrified models to its lineup.

Let’s start with the 2025 BMW i5 xDrive40. While not as potent or explosive as the 510-horsepower i5 M60 xDrive we already know, it still generates 389 horsepower and 435 lb-ft of torque. This means it can sprint from 0-100 km/h in 5.4 seconds.

What’s more, the 84.3kWh battery (net capacity) delivers a range of up to 428 km--versus 412 km for the other i5—and can charge at up to 205 kW when plugged into a DC fast charger. In other words, the battery can be topped up from 10-80 percent in as little as 30 minutes.

Production of the BMW i5 xDrive40 is scheduled to begin in March. Customers will also appreciate the fact that it’s cheaper, although Canadian pricing has yet to be announced. For the record, the i5 M60 xDrive retails from $95,000.

PHEV is Back

The 5 Series used to be available with a plug-in hybrid powertrain, as you know, and that will continue with the new generation, even in Canada. The 2025 BMW 550e xDrive features a larger-capacity battery (19 kWh) enabling longer distances (exact figure TBD) and higher speeds (up to 140 km/h) in purely electric mode.

With regard to performance, the combination of the turbocharged six-cylinder engine and electric motor is good for 483 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque, resulting in 0-100 km/h acceleration in just 4.3 seconds. Power is controlled by the xDrive all-wheel drive system and an eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission, the latter housing the electric motor.

The 2025 BMW 550e xDrive will roll off the same assembly line as the i5 starting in July. Once again, pricing for Canada is not available at this time.
