Half a Million GM Vehicles in Canada Hit by Two Separate Recalls

General Motors this week announced two separate recalls affecting nearly half a million vehicles across Canada.

The first one targets 222,490 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra full-size pickups from 2020-2023 as well as some of their Heavy Duty models from 2024. In some cases, water could leak into the exterior tailgate switch, which could cause the tailgate to unlatch and open unexpectedly while parked.

If this happens and the driver doesn’t notice it, any cargo that is not properly secured could fall out of the truck bed and create a road hazard for others.

GM dealers will need to replace the exterior tailgate switch. As a precaution, the automaker recommends owners to inspect the tailgate in order to ensure it's closed and latched before driving.

The second recall affects 273,255 vehicles in the country representing multiple 2020-2024 Buick, Chevrolet, GMC and Cadillac model lines. Click here for the full list as posted on Transport Canada’s website.

Due to a software problem, the lower beam headlamps might not to turn on as it becomes dark outside if the multi-function switch is in the "OFF" or "PARKING LAMP" position. Furthermore, the daytime running lamps could turn off when the vehicle is moving, compromising visibility and increasing the risk of a crash.

According to the recall notice, the simple fix is to update the body control module (BCM) software.
