Volkswagen ID. 4 Leaked in China
Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you know that Volkswagen is developing a new generation of electric vehicles, starting with the ID. 3 hatchback unveiled last summer. However, the first model to be sold in North America will be a crossover called ID. 4.
Based on the ID. Crozz concept, the ID. 4 originally appeared in full disguise during a presentation in China last fall, then as camouflaged prototypes undergoing testing on the road. We’re still awaiting the official reveal, although we now have pictures of the final production vehicle that have leaked online.

These come from the Facebook page of Car News China, and while we’re looking at a Chinese-spec model it’s safe to assume the ID. 4 that’s headed to our shores will not change much.
Designers have done a good job of creating a dynamic silhouette that resembles the new Ford Mustang Mach-E to some extent. It looks like there will be different packages or configurations, as suggested by the various bumper and lower body treatments.
The rear view shows stylish LED taillights that are possibly connected by a light bar, as well as a high trunk with a relatively small opening.
The leak also includes these exterior dimensions: 4,592 mm long, 1,852 mm wide and 1,629 mm tall. For comparison, the current Tiguan measures 4,702 mm long, 1,839 mm wide and 1,659 mm tall.
The Volkswagen ID.4 will be unveiled for real later in 2020 (it’s likely the COVID-19 pandemic has delayed the automaker’s plans). VW Canada public relations manager Thomas Tetzlaff has previously said the vehicle will go on sale here early in 2021, although that might change, too. Stay tuned.
