Mercedes-AMG Aims for “Over 800 Hp” With Future PHEV Models

Two years ago, Mercedes-Benz announced that all AMG models will offer a plug-in hybrid variant in the future, not only to boost performance but also to comply with increasingly tough emissions standards.

While we’re still waiting for official details, British publication Autocar is now reporting that the Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe will kick things off with a range-topping GT 73e.

It will feature the automaker’s advanced 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive system as well as EQ Power+ technology, which goes well beyond the EQ Power mild hybrid system currently available on select Mercedes vehicles.

Look for a fantastic battle with the Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid, though the AMG GT 73e will have a clear edge in terms of power. Citing unnamed sources, Autocar is talking about more than 805 horsepower whereas the mean and green Porsche sedan produces 690 horsepower. With similar torque (just over 740 pound-feet), the former should achieve 0-100 km/h acceleration in less than three seconds.

The system will be built around an updated version of twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 engine, while the electric motor will be integrated into the rear axle and linked to a small battery pack.

Incidentally, future PHEV models from Mercedes-Benz will use a different system than the AMGs, with a smaller, less powerful electric motor positioned within the gearbox housing.

The official debut of the Mercedes-AMG GT 73e 4-Door Coupe is likely just a few months away. We’re also keeping an eye on the new AMG C 63, which will replace its twin-turbo V8 with an electrified and turbocharged four-cylinder engine.
