2022 Hyundai Elantra N to Come Standard With Manual Gearbox

Following its world premiere last month, the all-new 2022 Elantra N high-performance compact sedan today made its North American debut in virtual fashion. The event was supposed to take place at the New York Auto Show, but the latter has been cancelled due to rising COVID-19 cases in the U.S.

In addition to releasing a ton of new pictures of the car from its proving grounds in California City (don’t miss the photo gallery above), Hyundai provided a few more details that will surely please driving enthusiasts.

The great news is that the 2022 Elantra N will come standard with a close-ratio, six-speed manual gearbox allowing drivers to tap into the 276-horsepower turbo engine any way they want. The unit features rev-matching technology making heel-toe shifting unnecessary during downshifts.

Alternatively, customers can select an eight-speed wet dual-clutch transmission (pictured below) offering three unique functions, one of which is called N Grin Shift and boosts power for 20 seconds. It’s as easy as pushing a button on the steering wheel, and a countdown begins on the instrument cluster showing the remaining seconds for this function. Another is N Track Sense Shift, which optimizes adaptive shift for race tracks so drivers can focus more on steering.

Meanwhile, the Elantra N benefits from a performance braking system including 360-mm front ventilated and 314-mm rear ventilated discs, high-friction pads and improved cooling efficiency. Unlike other markets, North American-spec models retain a mechanical-type parking brake, which is terrific news if you’re into drifting.

Finally, Hyundai today confirmed that a full array of advanced driver assistance systems will be part of the package, namely Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA), Lane Keeping Assist (LKA), Lane Following Assist (LFA), Driver Attention Warning (DAW), High Beam Assist (HBA), Blind-Spot Collision Avoidance Assist (BCA), Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist (RCCA) and Safe Exit Warning (SEW), among others.

The Canadian on-sale date, fuel consumption ratings and price for the 2022 Hyundai Elantra N will be announced at a later date.
