2017 Hyundai Tucson, Sonata May Need Engine Replacement
Hyundai Canada has just announced a recall on 34,607 vehicles across the country. Affected models include the 2017 Sonata Hybrid sedan and 2017 Tucson SUV, all equipped with the 2.0-litre engine.
In some cases, the connecting rod bearings could wear prematurely. As a result, there could be an abnormal knocking noise from the engine and/or the oil pressure warning light may turn on. Obviously, the engine could fail if you keep driving the vehicle with worn connecting rod bearings.

It’s also possible, though much less probable, that a damaged connecting rod could puncture the engine block and cause an oil leak.
Hyundai will soon notify affected owners by mail and instruct them to take their vehicle to a dealer for an engine inspection test. Get this: if bearing damage is found, the engine will be replaced, plain and simple. Dealers will also update the software for the engine control module.
A recall for a similar problem was announced back in December 2020. It involved 14,549 units in Canada, including 2012 Hyundai Santa Fe, 2011-2013 and 2016 Sonata Hybrid, and 2015-2016 Veloster models.
