Hyundai EVs With Built-in Hoverboards Could Become a Thing
Automakers are only just beginning to find ways to make good use of the extra space afforded by the new electric vehicle platforms. So far, we’ve seen roomier, more versatile cabins as well as cool, innovative cargo solutions like the storage tunnels in the Rivian R1T and Bollinger B1/B2.
Hyundai, which recently launched the IONIQ 5 crossover and will follow it up with the IONIQ 6 and IONIQ 7, has another trick up its sleeves.

As you may know, the Korean manufacturer no longer wants to be just an automaker. Rather, it aims to become a mobility provider. And one unique way to maximize mobility is described in new patent documents filed in the U.S. and uncovered by CarBuzz.
The rear bumper conceals two docking stations for a pair of hoverboards. The latter stay charged while you drive and can be used after you park. The panel folds down so you can take one of the boards to continue your trip instead of walking.
As mentioned, there are two built-in hoverboards—one for you and another for a friend. Alternatively, you could combine both to create a four-wheel carrier for your bags or luggage. Another image shows a height-adjustable stem with a seat that you could fix to the board.
Of course, it might take years before we see anything like that on a Hyundai. In fact, the vehicle illustrated in the patent documents doesn’t look anything like any current or upcoming product. However, it’s one more example of the tremendous potential of future EVs.
