Mitsubishi Vision Ralliart Previews Sportier SUVs Because Cars Are Dead

Published on January 11, 2022 in News by Guillaume Rivard

Back in May 2021 when Mitsubishi announced its intention to revive the Ralliart sub-brand, a part of us got excited. The new concept previewed today—set to debut at Tokyo Auto Salon later this week—is not quite what we expected, let alone dreamed of.

The so-called Vision Ralliart looks nothing like a car in the mould of the departed Lancer. It’s not even a new standalone model. Rather, what you see here is based on the latest-generation Outlander. You know, because cars are dead and it’s all about SUVs now.

Essentially, Mitsubishi wants to give its vehicles a sportier, premium look while elevating their capabilities. The concept boasts much more aggressively styled bumpers (the rear one incorporates a large diffuser in sports car fashion), but the result is questionable. Fender flares add muscle to the bodysides while capping massive 22-inch wheels that sure are distinctive.

Mitsubishi says the matte black body shows blue highlights when hit by light. Unique graphics also appear on the lower portion of the doors. The front grille is closed by a clear panel, hinting at a fully electric powertrain. Unfortunately, no details are available at this point. Larger disc brakes are fitted, featuring six-piston calipers.

So, what comes next? We’re admittedly curious yet skeptical at the same time. Customer feedback on this concept will be used in the development of future Mitsubishi vehicles.

In related news, Mitsubishi aims to launch a range of Ralliart accessories for its SUVs in select markets. It showed two examples using the Outlander and Eclipse Cross, but we’re not very impressed when looking at the pictures. Red mud flaps, really?

Will North America get these accessories? We should find out soon enough. Keep following The Car Guide for all the latest on Mitsubishi.
